Privacy

AnthroSonus is a small, invite-only network for improvising musicians. This page explains what we keep about you, who can see it, and what you can ask us to do with it. We've tried to write it the way we'd explain it in person.

Who runs AnthroSonus: Anthrophonic, run by Casey O'Brien (Anthrophonic LLC is being set up), Budapest, Hungary. Questions or requests: hello@anthrosonus.com.

Built by OBDS (O'Brien Design Studios, obriendesignstudios.com).

What we keep, and why

Your account. Your email address, your password (stored scrambled, we can't read it), who invited you and when you joined. We need these to run your membership.

Your profile. Whatever you choose to add: your name, photo, a short blurb, your bio, instruments, genres, languages, city, links, videos and records, gigs, bands, what you offer (for example teaching or a place to stay), and how people can reach you. Most of it is optional, and you can change or remove it any time in your profile editor.

Connections. When your records, gigs or bands overlap with another member's, the site draws a line between you ("recorded with", "played live with", "in a band with"). Some lines appear automatically from shared records and past gigs. Others are claims that the other member confirms or declines.

Messages. Messages you send to other members are stored on our server so the conversation is there when you come back. They're private between the people in the conversation. They aren't end-to-end encrypted, and site admins can read a conversation if someone reports a problem in it.

What you add for everyone. Venues you suggest or vouch for, Resources you add or review, and feedback you send us. Your name is shown with venues, resources and reviews you add.

Music you upload. Audio files and their credits, stored on our server so they can be played on your profile.

Emails we send you. We keep a record of the emails we send (a welcome, a reminder to finish your profile, notice of new messages, and similar). To make those emails relevant, our mailing tool labels your contact record with things from your profile, such as your instruments, city and whether your profile is complete. We use this only to email members about AnthroSonus. We don't sell it or share it for anyone else's marketing. You can unsubscribe from any non-essential email.

Server logs. Like every website, our server records technical details of each visit (IP address, browser, the page requested) to keep the site running and secure. We keep these for about 52 days.

Profiles we started for you

Some members were invited with a profile we had already started from public information: their own websites, Bandcamp, Discogs and similar. Those profiles stay hidden from the public until the person joins and decides what to show. If you're one of them and would rather we deleted it, tell us and we will.

Services we use

We use a few outside services to run the site. They only get what they need to do their job:

  • Hosting: xCloud, on a server run by Leaseweb in Frankfurt, Germany. Your data is stored in the EU.
  • Backups: copies of the database are kept on our server in Frankfurt and deleted after 30 days.
  • Email delivery: SMTP2GO sends our emails.
  • Maps: map images come from OpenStreetMap. When you type a city (for a venue or a resource), the city name is looked up with OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service. Your browser loads map tiles directly from OpenStreetMap, which sees your IP address.
  • Code libraries: a few are loaded from cdnjs, jsDelivr and unpkg, which see your IP address. (Fonts are hosted on our own server.)
  • Videos members add: YouTube and Vimeo videos don't load until you click play. Then they play from YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com) or Vimeo with do-not-track on, and that service sees your IP address.
  • Imports: if you import records from Bandcamp or Discogs, we fetch the public page you point us to. Nothing about you is sent to them.

We don't use advertising or analytics tracking, and we don't sell your data.

Cookies

We only use the cookies needed to keep you logged in and the site working. There are no advertising or analytics cookies. If you choose to play a video, the video service may store its own data in your browser.

Why we're allowed to (GDPR)

  • Running your membership (contract): your account, profile, messages and the features you use.
  • Legitimate interests: keeping the site secure, showing the network (connections, directories), and the hidden pre-built profiles described above, balanced against your rights, which is why they stay hidden until you say yes.
  • Your choice (consent): making your profile public, showing your email or phone, optional emails. You can change these any time.

How long we keep it

As long as you're a member. You can delete your account yourself from your profile settings. Your profile disappears straight away; you have 30 days to change your mind by logging back in, then everything is removed for good. Messages you sent show as "Message deleted". Backups roll off within 30 days. Things you added for everyone (a venue, a resource) may stay without your name, or be removed if you ask.

Your rights

You can ask us to show you what we hold, correct it, delete it, limit how we use it, or give you a copy to take elsewhere. You can object to how we use it. Email hello@anthrosonus.com and we'll answer within a month. If you're not happy with our answer, you can complain to the data protection authority in the country where you live or work.

Changes

If we change how we use your data in a way that matters, we'll tell members by email before it happens.
